The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offers the brand’s reputation for athletic driving and an almost luxurious experience for a lot of money. This unique combination of elegant road manners and interior refinement makes the CX-5 one of our favorite small SUVs, especially the more expensive models that come with the optional 256-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The entry-level engine is a 187 horsepower four-wheel drive, but the four-wheel purpose is standard on all models, as is the lightweight CX-5, which is enjoyable regardless of your engine choice. But it also does rough roads without mishap and has good handling at intersections that cost twice as much. At the same time, Mazda came to life on a winding road. The Signature model we tested has a brake pedal that feels like it operates without lag and doesn’t have much touch when applying the brakes.

With two engines, the CX-5 has two fuel economy ratings. The 2.5-liter engine is 24 mm in the city and 30 mm on the highway. The floor-hinged throttle is better than many models that hang above the floor. And the steering wheel is well designed for the driver and doesn’t turn a bit. The armrests of the front seats are the same height for maximum height. The sacrifice comes in a small package: In this case, in our test, the CX-5 only has nine carry-ons behind the rear seats, but the storage space benefits from one flat spot.
